I'd follow him to the gates of hell and back

Hello my friend:

I just re-visited a story that, in this day and age, seems
like a fairy tale.

I first heard it a couple years ago and then again while
researching for 'The Leader's Mindset Now!'

You see, David Maxwell took over as CEO of Fannie Mae
(Federal National Mortgage Association) and for nine years,
took it from LOSING a milleeeon bucks every day to a high
flyer that PROFITED 4 milleeeon buckeroos every day.

Shortly after he retired, his retirement package soared in
value to over 20 milllion dollars due to the continued great
performance of Fannie Mae.

Since Fannie Mae is run under a government charter, this
didn't fly too well in the halls of Congress.

Well, Maxwell wrote a letter to Jim Johnson, his successor
and told him not to pay him the remaining $5.5 milleeeon
balance of his retirement because he felt that it would
trigger the kind of problems in Washington that would have
an adverse affect on the future of the company.

Well of course it would.  Those with power in Congress are
as greedy, sneaky and as conniving as they come.

But how many people would do what he did?  He didn't have
to.  It was his money.

Maybe a handful.  Right?

It gets better.

As reported in the Washington Post, he asked that the
remaining balance be given to the Fannie Mae foundation
for low income housing.

So was David Maxwell ambitious?

Sure, he could not have done as good a job as he did without
ambition.

But his primary ambition, which is the one thing that
made him so effective and such a wealthy individual, was
his desire to build something great, something lasting,
something much bigger than himself.

He helped the company become great...

He helped to create other great leaders...

So he was rewarded handsomely.

The problem today, as ever, is greed.

People who lie, cheat and steal for the crumbs in life
will never experience big bounties because they can't see
beyond their own petty desires.

The best leaders see the big picture.

They are trusted because they ARE trustworthy.

Honesty, believe it or not, still counts for something in
life.

Anyone who is just "out for themselves" and justifies it
with thoughts about how "everyone else is doing it" and how
"unfair" life is, is completely blinded by frustration and
greed.

I'm here to tell you that it's a mindset.

You can't read a book on leadership and "get it."

This email can't help you get it.

It's just a story.  A true one, but still just a story.

Because everything you think is true - but ain't - gets in
the way.

Are people going to stab you in the back, out to protect
their own interests.

Duh... of course.

Hey, you gotta be smart.  You must play with your eyes
wide open in life.

But in the end, people are going to listen to and follow
the person they believe they can trust over the one they
wouldn't turn their backs on.

That is what The Leader's Mindset Now is all about...

Getting results.

Gaining trust.

Winning in life in every possible way.

Being able to live out your life without medicating
yourself with drugs or alcohol in order to feel good.

Could David Maxwell have fought to keep the money he
rightfully earned?

Yup.

But if he was a different kind of person, he would not
have earned even a fraction of that amount in the first
place because the company would not have performed as well
as it did.

I would follow David Maxwell to hell and back.

During his tenure, Fannie Mae went from a dying
organization to one that beat the general stock market by
nearly 4 to 1.
