Level 5 leaders
Hello my friend:
Ask the average person walking down the street to describe
a great leader and they will probably say a great leader is
a good speaker.
Well, they might, but not necessarily.
If you push them further they will likely say that they
are very smart.
OK, they might be intelligent, but then again, they might
not.
Pushed a little more and they'll probably the say that a
great leader has a lot of formal education, as in an
advanced university degree.
Not necessarily.
In fact many of the world's greatest leaders had none of
these things... they are not great speakers, they are not
very smart and they have no university degree.
Dunces? Not quite.
In my 20 years of studying success and leadership, and
specifically in our research to create The Leaders Mindset
Now, one of the primary traits found in all of what Jim
Collins calls Level 5 leaders is the desire and willingness
to surround themselves with people who are smarter than
they are, who speak better than they do and who have more
education than they do.
The "person on the street" would find it very difficult to
believe that the "best" leaders want people that are
"better" than them around.
But that is the way it is.
Because what our research found is that even the most
brilliant people, or perhaps ESPECIALLY the most brilliant
people are too smart for their own good. Even they need
someone that they can believe in... that they can trust...
that they can follow... someone who appears to "know the
way."
If you can develop in yourself as many of the 42 core
leadership traits we've identified in all great leaders,
you could tie half of your brain behind your back and
you'll still be the one that people listen to and look to
for guidance.
Much of it comes down to character.
Because "average" people are intimidated by intelligence.
But the best leaders get excited when they are around
smart people, because they know that if they can help to
guide the focus and the energy of someone who is truly
brilliant, wonderful things can happen.
So instead of fearing or feeling small by the brilliance
of other people, get interested...
Do that and opportunity will be your lifelong best friend.
